Dear Friends, As the hour drew late yesterday, the Connecticut House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the Greyhound Protection Act, a humane measure to prohibit dog racing in the Constitution State. The vote was 112-36. Unfortunately, the session ended at midnight and the legislation was not taken up in the Senate. With a little more time, HB 6048 would now be on Governor Lamont’s desk! Ironically, our original bill to ban racing first passed in the Senate by a nearly unanimous vote in 2017. It was the House that timed out that year. But this strong record of success means that victory is within sight. Special thanks are due to Chair Maria Horn who championed debate on the floor and also to Representative Mike D’Agostino and Representative Josh Elliott who re-filed the Greyhound Protection Act this year. Please thank them for working to pass HB 6048. Their email addresses are as follows: Maria.Horn@cga.ct.gov, Michael.DAgostino@cga.ct.gov and Josh.Elliott@cga.ct.gov. There were a total of thirty co-sponsors, Republican and Democrat who signed on in support as well! I would like to offer my personal gratitude to Anne Hornish of the Humane Society of the United States and Jo-Anne Basile of CT Votes for Animals. Their leadership was key this year, as in years past. This is a team effort and I am proud to have such wonderful colleagues. For the hounds,
